Minutes of the Programme

The programme is about TOT training for Volunteers from Singarathope & Thazhanguda hamlet and staff of World vision on Disaster Preparedness. This is the first training programme organised for the community by World Vision for Disaster Preparedness and 4 volunteers from Singarathope hamlet, 3 Volunteers from Thazhanguda hamlet and 14 staff from World Vision attended the Training.

This training programme is organised for the volunteers and staff in order to prepare them for the Participatory Learning Action (PLA - a modified version of PRA) exercise to be held in their respective villages, shortly. The first PLA exercise is being organised on 23rd and 24th of March 2006 at Thazhanguda hamlet. It is planned that 2 World Vision staff with one volunteer will be assisting the groups during the PLA exercise, where the role of 2 staff will be to guide the group and role of one volunteer will be to lead the group.

Mr. Sherine David, NUNV, District Recovery Facilitator, Cuddalore and Villupuram, UNTRS-TN handled the morning first session on Introduction to Disaster Preparedness. The NUNV covered the topics on what is disaster, types of disaster, do and dont's during a disaster, disaster management cycle and role of volunteers in the community.

The second session on Activities carried out in Cuddalore District by DRM Programme is handled by Ms. Sakinabee, DPO, DRM Programme. She gave a note on the various teams formed in a village, role of the district administration in addressing the importance of Disaster management, activities of villagers during a disaster.

Mr. Raja kumar, Programme Manager, World Vision gave a summary note on Disaster Preparedness and small introduction on PLA.

The video show on Earth Quake, Experiences from Bhuj Disaster of TIFAC given by the JC office was played after the Third session.

After the lunch the first session was handled by Mr. Jaya Kumar, Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, World Vision on Participatory Learning Action (PLA) Exercise. He addressed on the concept, technique of PLA and how it works, effective methodology to form the Community Based Disaster Preparedness (CBDP) group in the community, effective methodology in facilitating the exercise, how to implement it in the field.

Mr. Bradley Thompson, National Coordinator, Disaster Preparedness Programme organised the whole participants in two groups and asked them to discuss about the preparations to be done in their community incase of Disaster warning.

Mr. Philip, staff of the World vision organised the group activity where the participants were formed in two groups and were asked to draw the resource map and to provide information on historical profile of their community with the guidance from the trainers.

The participants responded actively and sounded interesting to this training and are eager to do the training in their community.
